HistoryTamarac was originally a senior retirement community in the early 1960's. A developer from the Midwest came out to the area toward the later part of the decade and bought up most of the town property. He started a chain of car washes called Car-A-Mat and humorously called the city Tamarac which was the name of his car wash chain spelled backwards. It was incorporated in 1963. The population in Tamarac could term the city a senior retirement city which it began as because the median age is 52.9 years old. This is roughly 14 years older than the Florida state average. Some of the strictly local attractions include quaint institutions like Oma's Garden or the Broward County Main Library. The Coral Square Mall and the Boca Raton Old City Hall add flavor to the environment. The Broward County Convention Center hosts many events for the community at large as well as specialized attractions or seminars. There are also quite a few country clubs in the area because of the senior population. |
