Brickell / Downtown

History

Brickell Florida is said to have first been inhabited by the Tequesta Indians. The population of this tribe has been recorded as being between to 800-10,000. Once the Europeans began arriving in Florida in the 1500’s they were not welcomed by the Tequesta people at first. Eventually, the Europeans made a friendship with the natives by giving gifts and beginning a trade system with them. However, with disease spreading from the Europeans by the 1800’s there were few survivors of the Tequesta tribe. In honor of the Tequesta tribe there is now a statue of a proud Tequesta family located within the town to honor the early inhabitants.
