History
The city of Miami was once a sleepy fishing village on the edge of the
Everglades. This began to change quickly when millionaire Henry Flagler
extended his Jacksonville-West Palm Beach railroad line to Miami. This
accelerated the arrival of northeners. Automotive pioneer Carl Fisher
started developing an uninhabited barrier island which he named Miami
Beach, while at the same time building the Venetian Causeway bridge to
connect it with downtown Miami. During the roaring twenties Miami home
rentals boom and prohibition, the growing city became a wild town where
gambling, bootlegging, and moonshine flourished along the many coastal
inlets. During the 1930s Pan American World Airways built their
seaplane base in the historic Coconut Grove neighborhood. Today it
houses City Hall and the Dinner Key Marina.
